The Space Between the Words

A hand on my arm, a smile, maybe a hug.

When acquaintances see me in the post office, grocery store, wherever, that’s the best thing they can do. Words just kind of seem like platitudes now. The silent gestures let me know that that kindness, community, humanity are all  there, but that the giver knows there is just no way to bridge the gap right now. There’s just nothing they can do, nothing I can do. But, somehow, those gestures let me know that they won’t let me fall.
